THANK YOU TO OUR OUTGOING BOARD MEMBERS

OTC would like to recognize the contributions made by this year’s outgoing board members. Here’s what Chuck Richards and João de Luca said about their involvement with OTC.

Tell us a little about your involvement with OTC.
In 1972, I was a senior in high school when I first attended OTC. I helped my father set up his company booth in the old Astro Hall. I have attended every OTC since then. In college, I helped my dad set up his booth and spent more time in the exhibition and technical sessions. I began to gain an appreciation for the new technology, opportunities on display, and how these technologies applied offshore. At this moment, I knew this was an industry where I wanted to work.

Right after college, I went to work for my dad selling subsea instrumentation. I served on the OTC Technical Program Committee in the mid- to late-1980s and volunteered for several different committees throughout the 1990s. My dad served on the OTC Board of Directors in the late 1990s and was eventually elected as the OTC Board of Directors Chairman.

I joined the OTC Board of Directors in 2012. While on the Board, I represented the Marine Technology Society (MTS). I have been fortunate to have chaired almost all the board committees.

What has OTC meant to you personally and/or professionally?
OTC has always been the place to meet people from all around the world who are working on the latest subsea technology. I always develop new business relationships and friendships from OTC social events.

From my time on the board, I have developed friendships with some truly amazing people including board members, committee members, and staff. During this time, I have learned a lot from each of them. Being involved with OTC has opened many of doors for me

What is the initiative or project that you worked on and feel most proud of?
I am proud of last year’s Spotlight on New Technology® Committee, which I chaired. Chairing the Spotlight program requires a lot of time to review and rate each submission. However, the joy and sense of pride the recipients have when they are notified make it all worthwhile. The most fun I had was chairing the Distinguished Achievement Awards Dinner in 2013. I had the opportunity to meet and have dinner with the Prince and Princess of Norway. This was a very special moment in my life.

What would you say to someone who wants to become more involved with OTC?
Go for it! You will get more out of it than you put in. Join one of the sponsoring societies and get involved with their OTC Program Committee. Get in touch with a Program Committee Chairperson to volunteer your time to rate abstracts. You will be working with a great group of people who are reviewing the latest technology in your field. Friendships and professional relationships will be a natural fallout.

What was your favorite aspect of being involved with OTC?
My time on the Board of Directors has been by far my favorite experience with OTC. I joined the board in 2012 so the first few years were crazy with USD 100+ oil, then in the summer of 2014 oil prices started their decline. To manage changes like that to our industry in such a short time frame was very challenging for OTC. However, the hard work, dedication, and creativeness of the board members, staff, and OTC volunteers made and continue to make sure our programming and other services meet the current and future needs of our industry.

Tell us a little about your involvement with OTC.
I have been a member of OTC since the 1980s. When I joined, I initially represented Petrobras as the E&P Managing Director and later served as the President of IBP. For the past eight years, I have been serving as a member of the Board of Directors, representing IBP.

What has OTC meant to you personally and/or professionally?
OTC has made a significant impact on my professional and personal life. The first time I attended OTC, I was extremely impressed with the magnitude and professionalism of the event. I was overwhelmed with the high-quality lectures, technical program, and networking opportunities.

To disseminate and exchange experiences and technologies being developed in the deepwaters of Brazil, I realized OTC was the ideal platform for these efforts. As a result, I have attended most OTCs in the last 30 years.

What is the initiative or project that you worked on and feel most proud of?
In addition to facilitating the exchange of technological experiences between the main actors of deep and ultra-deepwaters, I also facilitated the alliance between IBP and OTC. This partnership allowed for the creation of OTC Brasil, an event of high magnitude. I was involved in helping to consolidate OTC Brasil while acting directly in the organization of the last four editions.

What would you say to someone who wants to become more involved with OTC?
Don't miss your opportunity to get involved with OTC. If you are a speaker, technical program presenter, or an active member of the various organizations, you will receive more from OTC compared to what you put in it.

What was your favorite aspect of being involved with OTC?
My favorite aspect is the feeling I have of being part of an institution recognized as the top conference in terms of organization and representation of the global offshore industry. Having had the opportunity to act as a Board Member was one of the greatest achievements I had in my personal and professional life.
